Like most developing countries, Nigeria has an unmet housing deficit, especially in rural areas with the attendant challenges of unsafe housing, insufficient living space, a lack of safe drinking water, inadequate sanitation, non-existent refuse collection and limited or no access to electricity. To contribute to a safe living environment in the host communities, the Oriental Energy Village Housing Project was initiated at Mbo in 2017.
The Oriental Village Mbo is a unique and innovative project. It entails the construction of 100 one-bedroom apartments, a clinic and six learning centres within a secure estate. The housing units and associated facilities will be powered by solar/photovoltaic panels. As part of the project, 70 members of the host communities have been employed and trained in the innovative building technology. The sustainability strategy for this project is encompassed in a legal framework agreed by project stakeholders with regards to the distribution of the housing units and management of the housing estate.
